I am a Christian; born and raised in an Episcopalian family, I was constantly read to from the Bible. I learned that the body is sacred; made in God's own image, our bodies are temples, inside which lives His spirit within our hearts. From this, I gathered that we should treat the body with utmost respect.
So how does tattoos work into this?
I feel like a lot of tattoos nowadays - or at least, for some people who get them - are meaningless. So you like that really cool tribal design? That's great! But why would you want that on your body? Simply because it's cool? The problem with this type of thinking is that there is a high chance you'll regret the tattoo later - around 50% (says Discovery Health). People often don't think about the consequences of getting a tattoo. Yes, it may look good for a while, but what will hiring companies think when you've got a tattoo on your head? What will your children think about the pin-up girl on your forearm? How "cool" do you think you'll be 50 years from now, sitting in the retirement home with a razor blade inked on the side of your neck?
I'm not saying this because these tattoo ideas aren't good; I only wish to point out the fact that many people get tattoos without thinking seriously about what it will mean. Tattoos are permanent! Unless you're willing to spend a lot of money and time getting them removed, which is usually a very painful process, why wouldn't someone be confident in their tattoo choice?
My philosophy behind tats is simply this; your body is a work of art. For those who would never consider getting inked, this is the way they leave it; unaltered and clear. But for people who like the idea of a tattoo, the body is simply a blank canvas, ready to be colored in. But as all artists know; art is not a picture of something 'cool' or especially likeable. It is all about artistic expression, and it is highly personal. What a person gets on their body says something about their character, their personality, their likes or dislikes, their thoughts and views of the world. This is why, in my opinion, it is so important to be sure of what you want on your body. Because we must learn to respect what we're given, we should only tattoo something on it that we truly believe is worth being tattooed.
Comment with your thoughts. Agree or disagree? Tell me why! I just wanted to express my thoughts on the subject.
